MISSION
OBJECTIVE

Chico State Formula SAE is a high-performance collegiate engineering organization dedicated to technical excellence and competitive racing. We provide an easy-to-join platform for students to gain hands-on experience in automotive design, simulation, and fabrication, bridging the gap between hands-off classwork and real-world motorsport application.

Our mission is to engineer a track ready racing machine; preparing the next generation of Chico State FSAE members with skills and opportunities to excel in automotive engineering. Through an SAE national competition, we test the limits of our engineering in the fastest car possible.

ENGINEERING &
DESIGN FOCUS

AERODYNAMICS

With a complete overhaul from previous years, a new full carbon fiber aero package allows the WR9B to maximize its downforce-to-drag ratio, while also minimizing weight. Obtaining a custom Chico State clearcoat and sparkle, the carbon fiber is polished to perfection and ready to race.

POWERTRAIN

The powertrain system is a critical component that directly influences performance, efficiency, and reliability. It encompasses the engine and all supporting subsystems responsible for converting fuel into usable mechanical power. Due to strict competition rules and the need for optimal performance within tight constraints, the design of the powertrain requires a careful balance of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and practical engineering considerations.

ELECTRICAL

Using a standalone ECU from Link, tuned and wired exclusively by students. We utilize a suite of sensors to monitor and optimize aspects of the engine’s performance well beyond what our Yamaha powertrain was originally capable of. This allows much greater freedom when designing powertrain components such as the restrictor, plenum, and exhaust size and lengths.

SUSPENSION

The WR9B suspension system maximizes tire grip across cornering, braking, and acceleration while maintaining predictable vehicle balance. Precision control arms maintain optimal camber and tire contact through suspension travel, ensuring consistent performance at the limit. A compact, low-mounted damping system reduces center of gravity without compromising coilover efficiency. The setup is fully adjustable at the track, allowing quick changes to camber, caster, toe, and ride height.

DRIVETRAIN

The brakes are the (arguably) most crucial part of the car, being a main tech event at competition, the new system utilizes 2 Tilton Master cylinders with high performance Wilwood brake calipers with brake force of over 5000lbs. This is utilized by a 4:1 pedal ratio, giving the driver amazing feel and adjustability. Although not much has changed since previous years, the reliable drivetrain does have a new chainguard to protect the driver as they weave through the track.

CHASSIS

The chassis is the skeleton of the car, and provides a platform for other subteams' success. Working with the Suspension and Aero team this frame has been optimized to maximize performance while also reducing weight by 20%. Every frame that is brought to competition cannot be used again. This provides the chassis team an engineering challenge of designing a better frame for every single car.

SPEED

Chico State’s Formula SAE team takes trips every semester to K1 Speed. The event encourages camaraderie inside the team, improves team morale, and encourages healthy competition. It helps new members get engaged into the club in a relaxed environment. Driving go-karts is one of the favorite events among members.

SHOOTOUT

Competing at Thunderhill Raceway, the NorCal Shootout served as a high-intensity proving ground for dynamic performance and system reliability. Real-world track data validated aerodynamic balance, suspension tuning, and power delivery under sustained load conditions, strengthening our competitive foundation heading into national events.

Formula SAE Michigan represents the pinnacle of collegiate motorsport engineering. Competing against top international programs, our team underwent rigorous technical inspection, design defense, and dynamic endurance challenges. The event tested not only performance metrics, but also reliability, strategic execution, and engineering discipline at the highest level.
